Are You Suited To This Approach?
People don’t seek emotional change unless on some level they want to achieve a successful outcome. However PST Therapists are trained to respect their client’s non-conscious desires and needs, as well as their more obvious conscious level ones. Session-work should not proceed unless you understand certain imperatives and you are comfortable with them. The following checklist is provided to give you an understanding of these imperatives. It should help you assess your suitability for this work and desire to proceed.
“Am I comfortable not talking about my symptoms or problems?” You already have the most accurate and detailed information regarding your problems and the ability to privately deal with them at your subconscious level. Out of respect for this, conscious level discussion about you and your problems will be kept to a bare minimum. This is a ‘FEELING-oriented’ and not a ‘talking-oriented’ approach.
“Can I accept that my subconscious knows what’s wrong?” This therapy helps you deal with the underlying CAUSE of your problems. Don’t be surprised if your practitioner seems not to want to know about any presenting symptoms that may have unconsciously developed from that cause.
“Can I accept that any memories I have may not be relevant? “ This is a “feeling” therapy not a “thinking or talking” approach. Time spent consciously discussing recalled memories or past experiences is actually counterproductive with this type of work.
“Will I be able to let go of the need to try and make things happen?” You must be prepared to give up the effort of trying to “make change happen”. Your practitioner is skilled at guiding and helping you to achieve a permissive “let it happen” level of operation. This is the appropriate way to allow for subconscious change.
“Will I be able to accept that my practitioner will not want information on any changes brought about during the three sessions?” Both during and after the completion of the sessions, your practitioner will not seek to know about the outcome. This work introduces a new response learning at unconscious level; the results of this new learning need to be observed over time.
“Can I let go of the conditioned belief that sessions have to keep going on and on until the therapist says it’s completed?” The unconscious re-learning or reframing process is usually gentle, rapid and permanent. In almost all cases, this requires only three contact sessions.
“Will I be comfortable with the idea that the subconscious re-learns in its own way, and that I must trust my unconscious to bring about change?” Your experience during and after the sessions may be profound or subtle, immediate or gradual, recalled or below the level of awareness or a combination of these. This is why your practitioner doesn’t seek feedback in-session, and why the subsequent contact a few months after treatment is so important in verifying the ongoing nature of long-term success that clients experience with this approach.
